EFUDEX ® helps you get your healthy skin back

Although, my mom and my brother had different experiences with Efudex®, the outcome was the same. It worked!

Efudex® is a cream containing 5-fluorouracil medication and it is prescribed by dermatologists to remove multiple Actinic Keratoses on the face. It works like a "seek and destroy" drug as it targets only the bad cells and the good ones get to stay! Although this medicine works, it is often painful and unpleasant.

It works by disrupting the growth of the cancerous cells. When using this cream, the treated skin turns bright red, flaky and very tender for a period of weeks. The skin actually looks worse before it looks better.

This is not a treatment option for anyone who is in public a lot. My mom's retired, so she just didn't go out during her treatment. However, my brother teaches Tennis for a living, so he could not take 3-5 weeks off for the treatment.

Also, my mom went through her Efudex® treatment many years ago, and doctors have become much better at adjusting the dosage, length of the treatment and dealing with the side effects. However, knowing full well what he was in for, my brother took a deep breath and dove right in. He knew he didn't have a choice. He had so much sun damage from his years in the sun, both playing and teaching tennis. He did a shortened 14 day treatment course during the so-called rainy season in Southern California - a.k.a February.

I saw him once towards the end of the treatment cycle and I thought he looked pretty bad. But, he said it really wasn't that bad. There are forums on the web for people going through this treatment. If you are considering this option, check out the Topicalinfo.org forum.

Sometimes the treatment is awful, but no treatment is worse.

Both my mom and Jeff are really very happy they went through with their Efudex® treatment and their skin is so much healthier now. We all can really see a difference. I don't know if it's one of the few good side effects, but my mom's age spots got lighter and her skin looks smooth and even. Also the deep wrinkles around my brothers' eyes have lessened to some degree and they both look younger.

All procedures have advantages and disadvantages including side effects, risk of scarring, and the number of sessions required. I am not endorsing or recommending Efudex®, you must decide for yourself what is best for you.

Don't forget that once you have been treated for Actinic Keratoses, you should continue screening for skin cancer annually either by a doctor, health care provider or some form of self screening.
