These sun protection tips are easy to follow rules to protect you, your family and friends from UV (Ultraviolet) radiation. During the last few decades doctors have become more and more aware of the increase in skin cancer in the Unites States and we need to educate as many people as possible to protect themselves from the sun.
The damage caused by exposure to the sun’s UV rays includes: premature aging, such as wrinkles and age spots, skin cancers
(melanoma and non-melanoma),
eye damage, such as macular degeneration and blindness. Other medical conditions can be made worse by exposure to the sun: Lupus, and other autoimmune diseases and certain medications (antidepressants, antibiotics and retinoids) can make a person extremely sun sensitive.

- Wear “Broad-Spectrum” SPF 15+ sunscreen EVERYDAY. Even on cloudy and overcast days.
- Apply enough sunscreen at least 15 minutes before dressing and/or going outside. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, more often if sweating or swimming. Don’t forget areas like your ears, lips, neck, hands and feet.
- Cover-up with clothing
(UPF rated clothing is best).
Wear sunscreen under your clothing – a basic T-shirt only provides protection equal to SPF 5-8.
- If possible limit your sun exposure during 10am and 3pm when the sun’ rays are strongest.
- Keep in mind that UV reflections from snow, water, sand, pavement, concrete intensifies your UV exposure.
- Protect the kids: Keep newborns out of the sun altogether and children over 6 months should use sunscreen especially made for children.

Limit all children’s exposure to the sun as much as possible.
- Make sure your sunglasses have UVA and UVB protections, which should block at least 75% - 85% of the sun’s rays.
- Wear a HAT: choose wide brim or neck shield style hat to protect you ears, face and neck.
- See your doctor or dermatologist every year for a skin exam.
- DO NOT GET SUNBURNED.
